Reading the passage: The High Line is now one of New Yorks most attractive and popular city parks. However, its history is very unusual. It was once a railway line running above the citys busy streets. Trains started making their way through the West Side of Manhattan in the 1840s, more than ten years before the start of the American Civil War. These trains were used mainly for goods rather than passengers, bringing food and other items to New York shops. They also carried raw materials to city factories and then took the products they made to markets outside New York. These early trains travelled through the city streets, crossing the path of pedestrians and horse drawn vehicles. So many accidents happened that men were given jobs as west side cowboys. Their role was to ride on horseback in front of the trains, waving a red flag in order to warn people that a train was coming. In 1929 the railway company agreed to carry out a development programme, known as the West Side Improvement project. They built a railway about the level of the streets. This made the city much safer by getting rid of 105 level crossings. Trains began using the High lIne in 1934. Factories and shops along the route had to make several changes so that items could come and go on an upper floor, without causing traffic problems at street level. As manufacturing in the city declined during the 1950s, so did train traffic. The southern section of the High Line was demolished in the 1960s, and in 1980 three carriages of frozen turkeys were the last goods ever carried by the remaining section of the High Line railway. The track had now fallencompletely out of use. But then the problem was what to do with the two and a half kilometres of unused railway track. Many people thought the railway company that owned it should pull it down, but others saw some more interesting possibilities. They wanted to use the space in a way that would benefit the whole community. Discussions considered making it available for parking or for billboards, but the final decision was to transform the High Line into the citys most unusual park. Interestingly, between 2000 and 2001 a photographer created public interest in the project when he took pictures of the disused railway line. These showed how beautiful wild flowers had started growing along the tracks and made people realise the lines potential. A Friends of High Line group was formed to support the redevelopment of the space. There was some political and other opposition, but eventually plans were accepted, money was raised and work could begin. Building of the first section of the park started in 2006. The first section was opened in 2009 and the second, from West 20th Street to 30th West Street, in 2011. The third section runs to the north, round the West Side Yards, which is still an active rail yard, and this was opened to the public in 2014. There are now eleven entrances to the park, five of which are accessible to people in wheelchairs. So what is like to walk along the High Line these days? The space has been developed in a very inative way with lots of different things to see at different points. Many interesting plants grow along the walkway. Many New Yorkers give their time to plant and look after these, saying that it gives them the perfect opportunity after a busy day at work to enjoy spectacular views of New York and the Hudson River. There are playgrounds for children, as well as places to sit and relax or share a picnic. There are works of art to enjoy and it is often possible to watch performers. Dance parties and exercise classes are also held there. It is not surprising that the area has already been used in a number of films and TV programmes. The High Line in New York is an extraordinary example of how a city was able to transform something ugly and unused into something of true beauty, enjoyed by the whole community 1. 1840s: " West Side Improvement programme meant there were no more ________ 2.1929s : West Side Improvement programme meant there were no more _______ 3.1934s : Trains moving on the High Line meant there were fewer _______ 4. 1950s: Less need for the railway because of less _______in New York 5. 1980s: Final thing transported before closure of High Line: ______ 6. 2000s: The work of a _____helped to get more support for saving the High Line space for the community
